The Bowler Hat
Designed in 1849 by London hat-makers Thomas and William Bowler when the Earl of Leicester commissioned a close-fitting, low-crowned hat to protect his gamekeepers from low-hanging branches while on horseback at his Norfolk estate. The keepers had previously worn top hats, which were knocked off easily and damaged. In 1849 when the customer collected his hat, he reportedly placed it on the floor and stamped hard on it twice to test its strength; the hat withstood this test and he happily paid up! A practical yet stylish headwear item, it has more recently been adopted by a wide variety of people, whether worn with a few ribbons or a full-on creation, when many groups congregate, their ‘hat’ truly is their crowning glory!
